My career in television started in 1997 when I joined NEP (formally Visions). I started as a junior vision engineer and progressed to a truck guarantee broadcast engineer for outside broadcasts. This role requires excellent knowledge of the technical workings of various video signals, video paths, equipment, outside broadcast trucks and client needs.
I have a excellent understanding of various video standards, including SD, HD, UHD, SDR and HDR as well as Rec 709, 2020 and 2021 specifications. I work regularly in most of these formats to provide technical excellence under some demanding situations. Adding a creative touch to productions within technical specifications but also to the vision and instruction of the director, producers and lighting directors to help meet the quality expectation of a production. I have an eye for creativity when required and due diligence of picture quality and technical excellence for every production.
I’m able to operate various software packages from standard office computing software and cloud computing to complicated routing, mixer and EVS software. I have some understanding of computer networking and internet protocol structure and a good understanding of television system diagrams, permanent or temporary.
Each and every job has its demands and deadlines, which I’ve been able to meet with a professional attitude on every occasion. It sometimes requires out of the box thinking in a calm manor with good communication with clients and the technical teams I’m working with. I take a cheerful approach to engineering yet a professional attitude no matter what demands and stresses are present.
I can lead a small team of engineers as well as work as a team member under direction of others to achieve the technical specifications of the tasks. I believe every crew member has a part to play and has skills that are required to be used and respected. Sharing technical information is something I can do in abundance with appropriate language for technical and non-technical personnel on site.
I have a flexible and calm attitude which I feel is an important quality of an engineer, and when technical issues arise, a cool head to manage the situation is something I have learnt over the years. It’s important that the client has the confidence in the engineering team which is something that I understand well. Reliability is also a key aspect to the job and something that I pride myself in. I’ve often been described as a safe pair of hands onsite with any job I attend too.
Other interests outside of work are Advanced Motoring, I'm a member of the IAM and have qualified as an IAM Master with Distraction. (IAM Website) and photography, where I enjoy landscape, travel and street photography (my photography website)
